Anni Cinquanta. L'investigatore Anders Olsen indaga su un rapinatore di banche che ha sparato a due agenti ed è fuggito per le strade di Copenaghen. Una volta arrestato, il rapinatore afferma di aver fatto tutto da solo ma la cosa strana è che alcuni testimoni oculari sono pronti a testimoniare come l'uomo sembrasse agire in trance. Olsen scopre così che l'imputato è stato in carcere insieme al carismatico Björn Nielsenin e inizia a sospettare che questi lo abbia ipnotizzato al fine di commettere il crimine. Per risalire al bandolo della matassa, Olsen chiede aiuto a un rinomato ipnotista.
